Perry was born in Chicago to actors Laurie Metcalf and Jeff Perry. In the ABC sitcom Roseanne (as shown in flashback) her mother played Jackie Harris in two of Perry's initial TV roles. Her parents, however, were not keen to let her perform until she turned an adult fearing the effect of stress. Perry says she didn't want to perform in highschool but decided to start playing as a way to make friends at Northwestern University when she switched to it from Boston University. Perry went on to New York, where she landed small roles in series like Law & Order: Criminal Intent. Home sickiness brought Perry home to California and theater roles were available. The Other Place was performed by her mother and her in 2013 on Broadway in 2013. In 2015, she performed with her father and Kevin McKidd in Eugene O'Neill's Pulitzer Prize-winning film Anna Christie in the Odyssey Theatre Ensemble in West Los Angeles. Perry appeared in nine episodes of the ABC thriller The Family in 2016. Her father played her character in the ABC Drama Scandal. The same year her character was cast a younger model of Mary Cooper (Sheldon Cooper's mother) on Young Sheldon, a spin-off of the CBS sitcom The Big Bang Theory again playing a young character of her mom's role. The character was chosen by auditions, even having a strong association with it.
